Sudden Death in Psychiatric Disorders
نویسنده
چکیده
105 Abstract: Psychiatric patients are at greater risk of sudden death, with a 3–5 fold increase compared with the nonpsychiatric population. Sudden death may arise from complications of the mental illnesses or as a result of psychotropic medication. Anorexia nervosa, drug use, alcohol misuse are the mental disorders most likely associated with sudden death. A variety of psychotropic drugs, particularly antipsychotic agents and tricyclic antidepressants are associated with sudden death. Inducing cardiac arrhythmias are one of the most likely mechanisms of sudden death because of electric membrane alterations induced by psychotropic drugs, resulting in electrocardiogram changes. Psychotropic medication is not necessarily causative for excess mortality in psychiatric patients as higher doses might be linked with mortality through a contradictory factor such as worse physical condition in people with more serious mental health problems. Compared with non-suicide mortality, the number of deaths that might be attributable to medication is small, but according to most researchers, iatrogenic mortality must be taken seriously, with appropriate steps taken towards prevention.

CONTEXT Sudden infant death syndrome is the leading cause of postneonatal death in developed countries. Little is known about risks linked with parental mental illness per se or how such risks are modified by specific psychiatric conditions and by maternal vs paternal psychopathological abnormalities. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) exposes young patients to the risk of sudden death. The risk of sudden death separates the young patient from his peers, but connects him more closely to his physician. The physician may have a powerful effect replacing uninformed fears with accurate knowledge, restoring hope, and helping the patient shift focus from the fear of dying to engaging in life and li...

Brugada syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by specific dynamic electrocardiographic patterns in the right precordial leads and an increased risk of ventricular tachyarrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. Lithium, a drug commonly prescribed for psychiatric disorders, may unmask the Brugada ECG pattern in patients with the genetic disease. We report the case of a 50-year-old man with a ps...

BACKGROUND/AIM Pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) may be one of the causes of sudden death in hospitalized psychiatric patients. The aim of our study was to investigate whether fatal PTE in these patients may be the result of their prolonged physical immobilization, particularly when there were associated risk factors, and to emphasize the importance of this problem. METHODS A retrospective anal...
